It was a pleasure to meet peers across the European ETF industry in London at the Women in ETFs event hosted by J.P. Morgan Asset Management.
The first panel, “From the Podium to the City” included former professional athletes who spoke about the skills and lessons learned through both individual and team competition and how they translate to careers in asset management.
Three lessons from professional athletes to use in building a career:
1. The transition from being at the top of your field to taking on a new challenge requires a mental and physical shift. Embrace a beginner’s mindset and proactive curiosity (credit: Esme Burge).
2. When faced with setbacks (or injuries), the return to peak performance comes through setting small incremental goals and celebrating wins (credit: Maja Mirkovic).
3. Having a strong support system is crucial to an athlete’s success. Talent alone is not enough (credit: Siobhan-Marie O’Connor).
The second panel, “Lessons to My Younger Self”, spotlighted ETF industry leaders sharing (1) how they’ve grown in their careers, (2) the ways in which they lean into their authenticity, and (3) the importance of both male and female mentors (panelists: Angharad Binnington, Piera Elisa Grassi, Rebecca Anderton-Davies, Ella Burton).
